Many have asked, how do you turn left across a median? Are you supposed to hug the left curb or drive on the right hand side? Well, in Texas, it depends on the width of the median. If the width of the median is less than 30 ft., then you’re supposed to hug the left curb. If the width of the median is 30 ft. or more, then you’re supposed to turn left, across a median, on the right hand side.

Examples of medians LESS than 30 ft.: medians on Center St.
Examples of medians 30 ft. or MORE: medians on East Blvd. and Fairmont Pkwy.

We don’t expect you to get out of your car and measure the median with a ruler. You can visually estimate 30 ft. by estimating the length of 2 mid-size sedans. If 2 mid-size sedans can fit in the median, front to back, then it’s probably 30 ft. or more. If the median can only fit 1, then it’s probably less than 30 ft.

Most important part of turning across a median, is to avoid stacking multiple cars in the median. If there is already a car in the median, waiting to turn left, then wait for the car to vacate the median before proceeding.
