Sarcoptic mange, also known as canine scabies, is a highly contagious skin disease caused by the Sarcoptes scabiei mite. It is important to get your dog treated for this condition as soon as possible to prevent it from spreading to other animals or humans. Here are some steps you can take to care for a dog with sarcoptic mange:

  1. Consult with a veterinarian: Your dog will need to be treated with prescription-strength medications to kill the mites and alleviate symptoms. Your vet will be able to recommend the best treatment plan for your dog.

  2. Keep your dog isolated: To prevent the mites from spreading to other animals or humans, it is important to keep your infected dog isolated from other animals and limit their contact with people.

  3. Practice good hygiene: Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water after handling your infected dog, and clean any bedding or surfaces that they come into contact with to reduce the risk of contamination.

  4. Follow your veterinarian's treatment plan: It is important to follow your vet's treatment plan closely to ensure that the mites are eradicated and to prevent the infection from recurring. This may include administering medications as prescribed, bathing your dog with medicated shampoos, and using topical treatments.

  5. Keep your dog comfortable: Sarcoptic mange can be very itchy and uncomfortable for your dog. You can help alleviate your dog's discomfort by keeping them cool, providing them with plenty of clean water, and offering them plenty of opportunities to rest.
