The bigger technomagic gets the more it gets tampered with. DPPD dropped some info and safety tips about QR codes.
QR codes are a square barcode that smartphone cameras can scan, giving you quick access to a website. Businesses use QR codes legitimately as a convenience for customers to reach their websites or for customers to log in for direct payment of goods.
Now, criminals are tampering with QR codes to gain access to a victim’s device. Criminals tamper with both digital, and physical, QR codes to replace the legitimate code with a fictitious code, with the intention to steal the victim’s financial accounts. While QR codes are not malicious in general, it is important to use caution when scanning QR codes.
Some Tips when scanning QR codes:
- Ensure the QR code was not replaced with another code that was stuck on top of the original one
- Avoid making payments through a site navigated from a QR code
- Once you scan the QR code, make sure it is taking you to the intended site and looks authentic by checking the URL
