Texas' Historical Milestones On This Day May 26th

May 26, 2023 · THIS DAY IN TEXAS HISTORY

Our state's diverse past dates back to centuries ago. On May 26, 2023, the state witnessed several important events that helped shape its history.

On this particular day in 1837, the executor of William Barret Travis's estate put out a notice in the Telegraph and Texas Register for an escaped slave named Joe. Joe was one of the few survivors of the Battle of the Alamo that took place a year earlier. The notice ran for three months before it was discontinued, shedding light on slavery and its impact on Texas history.

Another significant event that occurred on this day was the birth of John Wesley (Wes) Hardin in Bonham, TX, in 1853. Hardin's violent career began in 1867 when he stabbed another child, and he went on to become known as one of the most notorious outlaws in the Old West.

Most notably, on May 26, 1977, the United States and Mexico established the Rio Grande as the international border from El Paso to the Gulf of Mexico. This agreement between the two countries has impacted the lives of Texans living near the border in many ways.

To further understand the state's historical significance, we look to one of Sam Houston's famous quotes, "Texas has yet to learn submission to any oppression, come from what source it may." The state has always maintained a sense of pride and resilience, even in the face of adversity.

These historic moments only scratch the surface of Texas's vast and intriguing history, proving why it's such an appealing place to live and visit. Tomorrow marks another day with new events that will be remembered for years to come.
