Texas' Historical Milestones On This Day May 18th

May 18, 2023 · THIS DAY IN TEXAS HISTORY

Today, May 18th, is a significant day in Texas History with a few notable events taking place.

One of the most tragic moments occurred in 1902 when a destructive tornado hit the town of Goliad, Texas, resulting in the death of 114 people. The tornado had a path of destruction 300 yards in width and was powerful enough to lift a train off its tracks.

In 1912, the USS Texas was christened and became the first battleship to represent its state. The battleship served in both world wars and is now a museum, providing visitors with a glimpse into the state's rich naval history.

On this day in 1978, "The Buddy Holly Story" premiered in Dallas, Texas. The film tells the story of Buddy Holly, a rock and roll icon who was born and raised in Lubbock, Texas.

Texas is known for its unique identity, and former Governor Rick Perry perfectly encapsulated this in his 2013 quote, "I don't want to look like Connecticut, no offense, I don't want to look like Oklahoma, I don't want to look like California. I want to be uniquely Texas. And that's not to diss anybody else."

Tomorrow, May 19th, marks a significant day in Texas history with events such as the birth of football legend, Mike Modano, and the passing of singer-songwriter, Townes Van Zandt.

What a day.
