Texas' Historical Milestones On This Day May 15th
May 15th marked several important events in our state's past.
One of the most significant events took place in 1755, when Tomás Sánchez de la Barrera y Garza founded Villa de Laredo. The location was chosen to resist French incursion into Spanish territory. This settlement played a pivotal role in the state's development, and today, Laredo remains a thriving city on the U.S.-Mexico border.
Another notable person born on May 15th was Katherine Anne Porter. She was born in 1890 in Indian Creek, TX, and went on to become a famous writer. Porter published several notable works, such as the novels "Ship of Fools" and "Pale Horse-Pale Rider." To honor her legacy, two historical markers were erected in her name at Indian Creek Cemetery in Brown County in 1990 and another in Kyle in 1991.
The opening of the Alamodome in San Antonio, TX, also occurred on May 15th, 1993, which marked an important milestone for sports enthusiasts in Texas.
Sadly, not all events on this day were joyous. In 2013, a tornado outbreak in north Texas claimed the lives of at least six individuals. However, the day is not without its lighter moments, as demonstrated by baseball player Adrian Beltre's home run on May 15th, 2015, for the Texas Rangers.
Perhaps one of the most memorable events that happened on May 15th in recent years was the infamous altercation between Rougned Odor of the Texas Rangers and Jose Bautista of the Toronto Blue Jays. After Bautista made a hard slide into Odor at second base, Odor responded by punching him in the face. Odor was suspended for eight games but this was eventually adjusted to seven.
As U.S. Senator John B. Kendrick noted in 1916, "The 'Texas Trail' was the highway over which a tide of cattle was moved from Southwestern and Western Texas to the northwestern states…" the state's history is one of resilience, adaptability, and ingenuity. With each passing year, Texans can reflect on their proud heritage and commit to advancing the state's storied legacy.
There' always something worth celebrating in Texas.
