Texas' Historical Milestones On This Day June 8th

June 8, 2023 · THIS DAY IN TEXAS HISTORY

On June 8th of 1969, the Houston Intercontinental Airport officially opened its doors to the public. At the same time, the Hobby Airport stopped conducting commercial flights but resumed operations a few years later. This was an important day for aviation enthusiasts, as Houston Intercontinental went on to become a major hub for both domestic and international flights.

Another significant event that occurred on this day was the death of Felix Morales, who founded KLVL. The radio station was the first Spanish-language news channel to cover the Gulf Coast, offering Latinos a platform of their own to listen to local news and stories. Morales's contributions to the world of journalism paved the way for others to follow in his footsteps.

In 2008, a fire erupted on the front porch of the governor's mansion in Austin, Texas. An unidentified person had thrown a Molotov cocktail, causing severe damage to the building. Governor Rick Perry, along with his wife, had already moved to another private home due to the ongoing $10 million renovation project. Fortunately, no one was hurt in the incident, and authorities were able to contain the fire before it spread further.

June 8th of 1990 is also remembered for the explosion that occurred aboard the Mega Borg tanker, which caused the release of over 5 million gallons of oil into the Gulf of Mexico. The incident had a catastrophic impact on the environment, leading to the deaths of several marine creatures and severely affecting the marine ecosystem's balance.
