Texas' Historical Milestones On This Day June 3rd

June 3, 2023 · THIS DAY IN TEXAS HISTORY

On June 3, 1836, a mounted ranger company with the Texas revolutionary army captured the Mexican ship, Watchman. This was the first of three ships that were captured by the Texans that month, on June 17. These captures helped the Texans to acquire much-needed supplies and resources during the Texas Revolution.

Fast forward to 1965, and another notable event occurred in Texas history on June 3. Ed White, from San Antonio, became the first American to walk in space. During the Gemini 4 mission, White conducted a spacewalk that lasted for over 20 minutes.

However, it wasn't just space exploration that marked June 3 in Texas history. In 1973, the Bilingual Education and Training Act became law. This new law required schools with 20 or more students with limited English skills to provide bilingual education. This helped to ensure that students who spoke English as a second language were not left behind in their education.

Finally, we look to the words of Davy Crockett, who famously said, "You may all go to Hell, and I will go to Texas." After losing the 1835 race for Tennessee's seat in the US legislature, Crockett moved to Texas, where he lost his life fighting at the Battle of the Alamo. His words have become a well-known part of Texas folklore and a testament to the state's independent spirit.
