Texas' Historical Milestones On This Day June 2nd

Texas History: From Wegefarth County to Prince's Concert

On June 2nd, 1873, the Texas legislature declared the existence of Wegefarth County. However, it was short-lived as it was suppressed when the legislature created the current Panhandle counties in 1876. Two years later, on the same day, the Comanche surrendered to U.S. troops at Fort Sill, ending the Red River War and opening up the Texas Panhandle to settlers.

Moving ahead to 1993, Ronald Ray Howard's murder trial began in Austin, TX. The convicted killer shot and killed a state trooper after listening to Tupac Shakur's "2Pacalypse Now" album. The incident later led to Howard being sentenced to death.

Fast forward to 2007, where Prince, the legendary artist, played with Grupo Fantasma at The Belmont in Austin. Reports reveal that the iconic singer was paid a whopping $1 million for performing only 6 songs.

However, not all events on June 2nd had a pleasant outcome. In 2016, at Fort Hood, TX, nine soldiers lost their lives when their Light Medium Tactical Vehicle overturned at Owl Creek. The incident was a tragic reminder of the dangers that our soldiers face while serving in the military.
