Texas' Historical Milestones On This Day June 28th
One of the most impactful events in Texas history occurred on this day in 1919. The Texas Senate ratified the Nineteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution, guaranteeing women the right to vote. This amendment was a major step forward in the fight for gender equality and paved the way for women to have a voice in our democracy. Just a few days earlier, on June 23rd, the Texas House also passed the amendment, solidifying Texas' commitment to women's suffrage.
Jumping ahead to 1962, another significant event took place. Texas humorist John Henry Falk was awarded a $3.5 million libel judgment against AWARE, Inc., after they falsely labeled him as a communist. While this judgment was later reduced to $500,000 in an appeals court, it was still a triumph for Falk and a reminder of the importance of standing up against false accusations.
Tragedy struck on June 28th, 2016, near the town of Panhandle, Texas. Two BNSF trains collided, resulting in the loss of three out of the four employees on board. This devastating incident served as a reminder of the risks that individuals in certain professions face and the importance of safety precautions.
