June 1, 2023 · THIS DAY IN TEXAS HISTORY

On June 1, 1881, the Southwestern Telegraph and Telephone Company opened its first operational telephone system in Dallas. The system had only 40 subscribers initially, but it paved the way for the modern telecommunications system in Texas and across the country.

Another significant event took place in Texas history on this day in 1969, near Stonewall. The Lyndon B. Johnson State Historical Park was opened to the public, named after the 36th President of the United States and former Texan Senator.

In addition, Texas became home to the first-ever Kerrville Folk Festival on this day in 1972. The festival was held at the Kerrville Municipal Auditorium and has since become an annual celebration of the state's rich musical history and culture.

Texas Quote by U.S. Senator John B. Kendrick on December 10, 1916, is as follows, "The 'Texas Trail' was the highway over which a tide of cattle was moved from Southwestern and Western Texas to the northwestern states, including Indian Territory, Kansas, Western Nebraska, Colorado, Wyoming Territory, North and South Dakota and Montana."

Texas is full of unique and significant events in its history, and June 1 is no exception.
