Texas' Historical Milestones On This Day June 18th

June 18, 2023 · THIS DAY IN TEXAS HISTORY

In 1796, Friedrich Diercks was born near the village of Neustadtgödens, Germany. Little did he know that he would play a significant role in shaping the future of Texas. In 1831, Diercks founded Industry, TX, in Austin County. This settlement would become the first permanent German settlement in the state, marking an important milestone in Texas history.

Moving forward to 1876, we find ourselves in the Texas Panhandle. It was on this day that Charles Goodnight and John G. Adair finalized a contract, creating what would become known as the JA Ranch. This privately held cattle ranch is believed to be the oldest in the Texas Panhandle and has played a vital role in the state's ranching history.

Fast forward to 1915, and we find the birth of Paul "Red" Adair in Houston, TX. Adair would go on to become a famous oil well firefighter, known for his fearless efforts in extinguishing the Devil's Cigarette Lighter, a major oil well fire in the Middle East. His skills and bravery are still admired in the industry today.

Lastly, we come to a more recent event in Texas history. On June 18, 1971, Southwest Airlines began its service with its first flight from Love Field in Dallas. This marked the beginning of a new era in aviation in Texas, as Southwest Airlines would go on to become one of the state's most successful and well-known airlines.
