Texas' Historical Milestones On This Day June 14th

June 14, 2023 · THIS DAY IN TEXAS HISTORY

On June 14th in different years, many significant events took place in Texas that shaped the state's history.

In 1881, The Laredo Times was founded, becoming a prominent newspaper on the border. It wasn't until 1926, though, that the paper included a Spanish section, becoming the first English-language paper in the area to do so.

Fast forward to 1920, and Sul Ross State Normal College began operations in Brewster County's Alpine. The college would later become known as Sul Ross State University, becoming a prominent institution in the state's educational history.

In 1958, famous musician Elvis Presley returned to Fort Hood for ten weeks of advanced tank training. This training, of course, was for Presley's role in the movie "G.I. Blues," but it is still a fun tidbit of Texas history.

Unfortunately, not all events in Texas history are pleasant. In 1983, five people lost their lives in a Fort Worth Ramada Inn's wing due to a fire that started in stacked rolls of carpet and padding. The ensuing fumes were toxic, causing immense tragedy.

Even in modern times, Texas history is still being made. In 2002, a power outage ended Britney Spears' concert in Lubbock after only two songs. It's a minor event, but it's still an amusing story to tell years later.
