Texas' Historical Milestones On This Day July 5th
Travel back in time to July 5th, 1848.
In an act that would have far-reaching consequences, the U.S. Congress passed a bill allowing Texas to redefine its eastern boundary. Previously, the boundary had been set at the west bank of the Sabine River. However, with this new legislation, Texas was granted the authority to move its boundary to the middle of the river. This decision would prove to be significant in the years to come, as it would impact various aspects of Texas's relationship with neighboring states.
Moving forward to July 5th, 1855, we find Governor Elisha Pease authorizing a mission into Mexico. James Hughes Callahan was entrusted with the task of crossing the Rio Grande to pursue Apache Indians who had raided Texas and then sought refuge across the border. The alleged purpose of this campaign was to bring these raiders to justice and prevent further attacks on Texas soil. It serves as a reminder of the complex and often volatile relationship between Texas and Mexico during this period.
