Texas' Historical Milestones On This Day July 2nd

July 2, 2023 · THIS DAY IN TEXAS HISTORY

One notable event that took place on this day is the birth of Angelina Eberly in 1798. Eberly would go on to play a crucial role in preserving the documents of the state capital. In 1842, when authorities attempted to remove these documents, Eberly fired a cannon in protest. This act became known as the Archive War, a testament to Eberly's determination to protect Texas' historical records.

Another momentous occasion occurred in 1863 during the Battle of Gettysburg. Colonel John Bell Hood, leading his Texas Brigade, launched an assault at Devils Den and Little Round Top. This battle showcased the bravery and resilience of Texas soldiers during the Civil War and further solidified their reputation as fierce warriors.

In 1948, Ralphael O'Hara Lanier made history by becoming the first president of the Texas State University for Negroes, now known as Texas Southern University. Lanier's appointment marked a significant step towards equal access to education in Texas, highlighting the state's commitment to inclusivity and diversity.

Fast forward to 1982, when Lawrence Chalmus Pope, a convicted bank robber, was paroled from a federal prison in El Reno, Oklahoma. Pope dedicated his life to advocating for prison reform and improving the conditions of confinement in Texas prisons. His efforts brought attention to the need for rehabilitation programs and fair treatment within the criminal justice system.

Unfortunately, Texas has also experienced tragic events throughout its history. In 1987, near Sierra Blanca, a heartbreaking incident occurred. Eighteen illegal immigrants were found dead inside a locked boxcar, a result of a failed smuggling attempt.
