Texas' Historical Milestones On This Day July 27th

July 27, 2023 · THIS DAY IN TEXAS HISTORY

In 1812, Prince Carl (Karl) of Solms-Braunfels was born in Neustrelitz, Germany. Little did he know that he would play a pivotal role in the establishment of German immigrant colonies in Texas. In July of 1844, he landed in Texas and spearheaded the colonization efforts. As a result, the city of New Braunfels, Texas, was named in honor of his homeland.

Moving forward to 1888, we remember the organization of Randall County in the Texas Panhandle. This event marked the growth and development of the region and its communities.

Fast forward to 1940 when Lonnie Smith, an African American resident of Houston, faced discrimination while trying to vote in a Democratic primary. Smith's perseverance led to a legal battle that eventually reached the Supreme Court. The court's decision granted all eligible Texans the right to vote in primary elections, paving the way for equal voting rights for citizens across the state.

Shifting our focus to 2001, we highlight a significant milestone for Dallas as the ribbon cutting ceremony was held for the American Airlines Center. This world-class sports and entertainment venue set two new records, one for the 3-mile-long ribbon used for the ceremony and another for the 2,000 people involved in cutting it.
