July 26, 2023 · THIS DAY IN TEXAS HISTORY

July 26th in 2015, Shin-Soo Choo of the Texas Rangers achieved a remarkable feat by hitting for the cycle. This means that in a single game, Choo managed to hit a single, a double, a triple, and a home run. It is a rare accomplishment in baseball and certainly a moment to be remembered in Texas sports history.

Going back in time, on July 26th, 1845, the U.S. flag was raised on St. Joseph Island by a detachment of United States troops. These troops had arrived to protect Texas from Mexican interference after its annexation. The main force landed just a few days later on August 1st. This event marked an important chapter in the history of Texas and its relationship with Mexico.

Another significant figure in Texas history, John Baker Omohundro, also known as "Texas Jack", was born on July 26th, 1846. He was a frontier scout, actor, and cowboy, and is credited with introducing roping acts to the American stage. His contributions to the entertainment industry and his skills as a scout have left a lasting impact on Texas and the Wild West.

Sadly, this day also marks the death of Sam Houston in 1863. Houston was a prominent figure in Texas' fight for independence and later became the president of the Republic of Texas. He opposed Texas' secession from the Union during the Civil War and his passing was a mournful moment for the state.

Lastly, on July 26th, 1887, the Union Stock Yards were chartered in Fort Worth, earning the city the nickname "Cowtown" for its significant commerce in livestock. This marked an important development in Texas' agriculture and economy, solidifying its reputation as a hub for cattle and ranching.
