Texas' Historical Milestones On This Day July 21st
First, in 1821, a key milestone occurred when the flag of Spain was lowered for the last time in San Antonio, Texas. This marked the end of Spanish colonial rule and the beginning of a new era for the state.
Moving on to the Civil War era, we remember Confederate General Barnard Elliott Bee Jr. in 1861 General Bee was mortally wounded at the first battle of Manassas, also known as Bull Run. He is famously remembered for immortalizing General Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson by declaring, "There stands Jackson like a stonewall!" during the battle.
Shifting gears to more recent history, in 1988, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission made a significant purchase that would greatly impact the state's natural beauty. They acquired Big Bend Ranch in Presidio County, forming the Big Bend State Natural Area. This acquisition ensured the preservation of the stunning landscapes and diverse wildlife found in this area.
In another event of the same year, President Reagan reached out to Texas Governor William Clements Jr. to wish him well after his stroke. This act of kindness demonstrated the strong bond between the president and the governor, as they both worked towards the betterment of Texas.
