July 20, 2023 · THIS DAY IN TEXAS HISTORY

July 20th, 1910, Galveston native Jack Johnson achieved a monumental victory by defeating the reigning heavyweight champion, Jim Jeffries. This win not only established Johnson as one of the greatest boxers of his time but also marked an important milestone in African-American history, as Johnson became the first black world heavyweight champion.

Jumping forward to 1969, Neil Armstrong made history by transmitting the iconic words "Houston, the Eagle has landed" from the surface of the moon.
