Texas' Historical Milestones On This Day July 19th
On July 19th in Texas
In 1714, Louis Juchereau de St. Denis arrived at the San Juan Bautista Presidio in Texas. St. Denis played a crucial role in founding six missions and a presidio in East Texas, leaving a lasting impact on the region.
Fast forward to 1843, when Sam Houston, the President of Texas, relieved Commodore Edwin Moore of his command in the Texas Navy. Following this decision, Moore was dishonorably discharged by Houston upon his return to Galveston. However, in August of 1844, Moore successfully appealed to the Congress of the Republic of Texas and was found not guilty.
The year 1876 marked a significant milestone, as the Texas and Pacific Railway completed a rail line connecting Fort Worth, TX, to San Diego, CA. This railway line facilitated transportation and trade, opening up new opportunities for economic growth and development.
Another notable event occurred in 1878, when the Texas Rangers fatally wounded famed Texas outlaw Sam Bass. Bass and his gang had attempted to rob a bank in Round Rock, but their plans were foiled by the Texas Rangers. Bass succumbed to his injuries two days later.
Moving into more recent history, on this day in 1981, the city of Odessa, TX celebrated "Roy Orbison Day." Roy Orbison, a legendary musician, received this honor in recognition of his contributions to the music industry.
