Texas' Historical Milestones On This Day July 14th

July 14, 2023 · THIS DAY IN TEXAS HISTORY

July 14th, throughout the years.

In 1805, a significant figure was born. Charlotte Allen, also known as the "Mother of Houston," came into the world. Alongside her brothers, she played a pivotal role in establishing the town of Houston in 1836. They bought land along Buffalo Bayou, which ultimately became the foundation of the bustling city we know today.

Moving on to 1879, the state of Texas implemented an intriguing plan to reduce public debt and contribute to the Permanent School Fund. They authorized the selling of state land for just fifty cents an acre. However, due to fraudulent speculation in the land, the Fifty Cent Act was repealed on January 22, 1883.

Shifting gears to transportation history, in 1890, the San Antonio and Aransas Pass Railway (SA&AP) faced financial struggles and went into receivership. Over four decades later, in 1934, a total of 819 miles of SA&AP track was merged into the Texas and New Orleans Railroad Company.

Sports enthusiasts, this one's for you! On this day in 1967, Eddie Mathews of the Houston Astros achieved a remarkable milestone. He hit his 500th career home run, solidifying his name in the baseball record books.
