Texas' Historical Milestones On This Day May 6th
Texas History: May 6
On May 6, 1838, a missionary Baptist church was organized at Liberty School House north of Nacogdoches, Texas. Originally named Union Baptist Church, it was later called Old North Baptist Church. In 1839, Texas Woman's Missionary Union was founded at this church, making it the first-ever Baptist women's group in the state.
In 1864, Confederate general Robert E. Lee commanded Hood's Texas Brigade to the front during the American Civil War. Leonard Karpeles, a former Texas merchant, received the Medal of Honor for his bravery at the Battle of the Wilderness the same year.
In 1935, the Works Projects Administration in Texas was founded. This program aimed to provide jobs to Americans during the Great Depression.
In 1999, Whataburger opened their flagship restaurant, "Whataburger by the Bay," in Corpus Christi, Texas. This stunning 6,000 square foot restaurant pays tribute to its founder, Harmon Dobson, with water views and a life-size bronze statue of Dobson near the entrance on the bay side.
Finally, Mexican Colonel Pedro Delgado spoke of the Battle of San Jacinto on April 21, 1836. He famously stated, "No important incident took place until 4:30 p.m. At this fatal moment, the bugler on our right signaled the advance of the enemy upon that wing."
These noteworthy moments are just a few examples of Texas history. Keep an eye out for tomorrow's highlights.
