Texas' Historical Milestones On This Day
On this day in 1931, David Browning, Jr. was born. Browning was a talented diver, winning the Texas state diving championship three times before going on to win a gold medal at the 1952 Olympics. Texas has a long tradition of sports excellence, and Browning's success is just one example of that.
Another noteworthy event on this day occurred in 1837 when the city of Houston was officially incorporated. Just a year earlier, Houston had been founded, and over time, it would grow to become one of the largest cities in the United States. Houston is now home to over 2 million people and remains an essential part of Texas's cultural and economic landscape.
Also in 1837, the Congress of the Republic of Texas granted a charter for the establishment of a seminary in Independence, Washington County. This nonsectarian and nonpolitical seminary became known as Baylor University, still widely recognized as one of the most prestigious universities in the state.
