Precinct 8’s Deputy Basurto nabbed another menace to society.
MAN ARRESTED AFTER LEADING DEPUTY ON VEHICLE CHASE
On Sunday, March 26, 2023 at approximately 3:09 PM, Deputy Basurto with Precinct 8 Constable Phil Sandlin’s Office received an alert of a prohibited vehicle while patrolling the 5900 block of the E Sam Houston Pkwy S. Deputy Basurto attempted to initiate a traffic stop on the suspect vehicle in the 7200 block of the S Sam Houston Pkwy E. The vehicle failed to yield and began to evade at a speed exceeding 140 MPH. Deputy Basurto terminated the pursuit due to the high speeds and shortly after, observed the suspect vehicle take the 288 Exit ramp and approach the intersection.
Deputy Basurto reactivated his emergency equipment, and the vehicle continued to evade driving erratically through traffic. The vehicle ultimately entered a business in attempt to avoid an intersection and was blocked in by deputies. A felony stop was conducted and the driver was placed in custody. The driver was identified as 20 year old Melvin Omar Castro. Deputies conducted a search of the vehicle and located a handgun in the cup holder.
The Harris County District Attorney’s Office was located and accepted charges for Evading Arrest in a Motor Vehicle. Charges for Unlawful Carry of a Weapon were declined. Castro was transported to the Harris County Joint Processing Center where his bond was set at $10,000.
