PRECINCT 8 DEPUTIES WORK TWO DWI'S AND A SEVEN CAR MAJOR ACCIDENT
On Saturday, November 20, 2021 at approximately 1:42 AM, Precinct 8 Deputy C. Calhoun, assigned to the Precinct 8 Toll Road DWI Task Force, initiated a traffic stop in the 13000 block of the Gulf Freeway. The driver was identified as 47 year old Ernest Martinez. While speaking to Martinez, Deputy Calhoun observed obvious signs of intoxication. Martinez performed poorly on the Standardized Field Sobriety Tests and was arrested for Driving While Intoxicated. Deputy Calhoun transported the Martinez to Harris County Joint Processing Center where his bond was set at $100. Deputy Alturi stayed on the scene to conduct an inventory of the vehicle before having it towed.
While processing the vehicle, Deputy Atluri observed a vehicle run into the back of a tow truck that was assisting a stranded motorist on the main lanes. The driver of the at-fault vehicle began to flee on foot. Deputy Atluri started heading towards the accident when approaching vehicles began sliding on the spilled diesel causing a major multi-vehicle crash. Deputy Atluri along with other responding deputies began to render aid to the drivers and passengers involved.
While Deputies were investigating the 7 car accident, a vehicle drove through the barricades towards the scene and stopped. Deputy Atluri approached the vehicle and observed the driver to be sleeping. While speaking to the driver, Deputy Atluri observed obvious signs of intoxication. The driver was identified as 34 year old Mahboud Shams Rahbari. Deputy Atluri proceeded to administer the Standardized Field Sobriety Test. Due to Rahbari’s performance, it was determined he was heavily impaired and placed in custody. A check of Rahbari’s information revealed he had two prior DWI convictions. The Harris County District Attorney’s Office was contacted and accepted felony charges of Driving While Intoxicated 3rd or More. Rahbari was booked into the Harris County Joint Processing Center. His bond has been set at $15,000.
