LPPD Tip: What to Do When Pulled Over by Law Enforcement.
What should you do if you are pulled over by law enforcement?
When approached by an emergency vehicle, police fire or EMS, with lights and sirens activated, safely move to the right side of the road, nearest the curb and come to a complete stop.
You will know the officer is stopping your vehicle when they follow you to the right side of the roadway. If this is the case and it is possible to do so, you may pull into a side street, parking lot, or onto the shoulder. Once stopped, place the vehicle in park and lower the driver’s side window. Turn on the interior light when stopped at night. Stay inside the vehicle, keep both hands on the steering wheel and wait for the officer’s instructions.
When asked, advise the officer where your driver’s license and insurance are located. Once acknowledged, you may begin gathering the required items. Always advise the officer of your actions and wait for a response before reaching around inside the vehicle.
Once released from the stop, safely return to the proper lane of traffic.
REMEMBER:
🚨Do not exit your vehicle unless asked to do so.
🚨Be courteous and follow the officer’s instructions.
Drive safe!
