LPPD launches Traffic Tip Tuesday social media campaign to address traffic concerns, starting with golf carts, ATVs, and dirt bikes.
We hear your traffic concerns, and our officers are on it! This summer we are launching a new social media campaign called #TrafficTipTuesday. Every Tuesday we will post a new traffic concern and related laws associated, in an effort to keep our community safe and informed.
This week’s #TrafficTipTuesday is regarding golf carts, ATVs, and dirt bikes.
In recent weeks the La Porte Police Department noticed a significant increase in complaints regarding the illegal operation of golf carts, ATVs and motorcycles. These vehicles were observed illegally operating on our public streets, sidewalks, and in parks.
Dirt bikes and ATVs are fun but are generally illegal to operate on public roadways, sidewalks, and in city parks.
Key things to remember:
Vehicles in parks generally. (City Ordinance Sec. 50-3) No person shall drive or propel any passenger car, pickup truck, sport utility vehicle, motorcycle, all-terrain vehicle, go-cart, trail bike, or any other vehicle over or through the parks, park areas, sports fields, or other park facilities except along or upon designated park drives, or parkways.
Golf Carts are regulated by (City Ordinance Article IX Sec. 70) and require a city permit, insurance, licensed operator, lights, specific equipment, and restricted to roadways with a posted speed limit under 35 mph.
Generally, it is unlawful for any parent to allow or permit a person under the age of 16 to operate any golf cart, ATV, motorcycle, moped, minibike, or motor assisted scooter, on any path, trail, sidewalk, or street within the city.
The information provided is general and focused on regularly observed violations relating to golf carts, dirt bikes and ATVs on public roadways and places.
