DPPD: Thieves are targeting catalytic converters again. ⚠️
Thieves are targeting catalytic converters again. Catalytic converters are filters for your cars exhaust system and it’s bolted to the underside. They contain precious metals (rhodium, platinum, and palladium) that have a high market value, thus it is easily sold for cash. Trucks and SUV’s are more vulnerable compared to passenger cars, because they sit higher off the ground, making it easier to access.
Here are some things you can do to prevent catalytic converter thefts.
-Park inside your garage when possible, otherwise, park in well-lit areas.
Often times, thieves get spooked by lights because it increases their risk of being detected. Bright, motion-sensor lights, paired with good video surveillance, gives you a higher chance that the thieves won’t target your car. When parking at a business, make sure your car is parked at a location with high visibility.
-Install an anti-theft device.
There are numerous sellers on the market for catalytic converter anti-theft devices. Some are a metal cage-like shield that bolts over your catalytic converter and others are steel cables welded from the catalytic converter to the car’s frame. Although these devices are expensive, it’s still cheaper than replacing your catalytic converter.
-Be vigilant.
Report any suspicious activities by calling 281-479-1511.
