DPPD Info: Toyota Tundra catalytic converters are stolen a lot because the aint cheap to replace! ⚠️

February 3, 2022 · DPPD, POLICE

Attention Toyota Tundra owners…

We’ve had multiple thefts of catalytic converters taken from Toyota Tundras. The catalytic converters from Toyota vehicles, have a higher market value thus thieves are targeting them. The thieves are stealing them while your vehicle is parked unattended for a long period of time (i.e. when you’re at work, the hospital, doctor’s office, the mall, etc.). The thieves usually use a cordless reciprocating saw (commonly known as Sawzall) to cut off each sides of the catalytic converter, that’s why it’s beneficial to weld an anti-theft metal cage, or a rebar, over the catalytic converter since they cannot be easily sawed off.

You will know your catalytic converter is stolen when you start your engine and it sounds like you started a Harley-Davidson motorcycle 😉.

Some of the suspicious activities you should watch out for:
- A vehicle slow-rolling in a parking area.
- A vehicle stopping closely and perpendicular behind a parked vehicle for an unusual period of time.
- A person loitering in a parking area.

Usually these thieves are working in pairs or more. One, stealing the catalytic converter while the other is waiting in their vehicle as a lookout.

If you see any of these suspicious activities, call 281-479-1511.
