It's tax season. Here are some tips to protect yourself from tax identity theft:
- Be aware of IRS scams; IRS will not ask you to pay with a gift card, over the phone.
- Don’t give out your personal information to just anyone.
- Avoid carrying your social security card.
- Shred your documents.
- Ignore threatening calls and texts from criminals posing as IRS or Law Enforcement.
- Be aware of phishing emails and texts. Don’t click on the link when you get a notification for you to log in to verify your information. Verify that information separately by looking up the contact information yourself.
