Armand Bayou Nature Center: The monarch butterfly was officially declared an endangered species last week ⚠️

July 27, 2022 · A-PASADENA NEWS, CITY, Parks and Recreation

The monarch butterfly was officially declared an endangered species last week. Their population has decreased due to urbanization which has caused the destruction of much of the prairie habitat necessary for the survival of these majestic pollinators. Monarch butterflies are known for their impressive migratory journey, traveling from Northern USA or Canada to central Mexico, passing through Texas along the way. These vulnerable travelers on the brink can be seen in the prairies of ABNC as they stop to refuel on the nectar-rich prairie wildflowers and on critical milkweed host plants. The restored coastal tallgrass prairies of ABNC are recognized by the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service as a Monarch “Way Station”.
